2020 was a rollercoaster of a year, but one good thing has come out of it: a one-time bonus extension option for au pairs! If you are in your second term, with an end date between December 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021, you may be eligible to apply for an extra six month extension.
Are you taking advantage of that option? What are some things you hope to do with your extra time in the U.S.? Personally, we recommend:
1. Making Snow Angels! The holidays might be over, but that doesn't mean all the magic and whimsy of winter is gone. If you live somewhere snowy, take your host kids out for this classic winter activity that's perfect for all ages.
2. Visiting a Botanical Garden. If you live in a major city, you might be finding it hard to social distance in the park these days. But if your local botanical garden is open, that could be an excellent place to get some fresh air with your host kids. Because these gardens can control how many visitors they get, it’s easier to keep your distance from other households than it would be at the park. And as a bonus, it’s beautiful and educational!
3. Share lessons with your host family. We are admittedly a little biased here, considering who we are and what we do, but APW is a big believer in education and personal growth. Since your visa requires you to take educational hours anyway, why not share what you’ve learned with your host family? After taking your course, teach your host kids how to create their own street art, or walk your host parents through a conflict resolution session. Including them in your activities will bring you all closer together. Learn more about our online courses here!
